Meditation Primer

Meditation relies on the body's ability to switch to a resting or relaxed brainwave state during which the brain's rhythm slows, and endorphins, the body's natural pain killers, are released.  During meditation, the metabolism is lowered, resulting in a slowed breathing and heart rates, and decreased blood pressure.  It is believed that meditation can help counteract the effects of stress on the heart and other organs.

The "How-Tos"

Peace and Quiet: Choose a peaceful setting and put time aside so that you will not be disturbed.

Position:  The cross-legged sitting position (also called the half-lotus position) is best.  Rest your right leg on top of your left one with your back erect.  Your hands should rest, palms upward, on your lap.  If the half-lotus position is uncomfortable for you, choose another - the key is comfort.

Relax:  Keep your mind focused and close your eyes gently.  Relax every part of your body, beginning with the muscles in your face and moving right down, muscle-by-muscle, to your toes.  Remember not to force the meditation. Make it fun, not work.

Breathe:  Feel as if you are sitting alone in the world and the air around you is filled with happiness and joy.  As you breathe in, feel that you are inhaling happiness and joy.  As you exhale, you are breathing out troubles and worries.

Focus: The basis of all meditation is to concentrate the mind on a single object or idea that has qualities to help bring your mind to a desired state.  A candle is a good focus object because it has the inherent qualities of brightness and clarity.  Using visualization, this brightness and clarity can be spread throughout your body.

Words of Peace:  Some people find it helpful to repeat in their minds a single word as they meditate. Words such as "peace," "love," "serenity," or "joy" are excellent choices.

Time:  It's best not to set time limits when you meditate.  Be happy just to do it and let the time go. Regularity is important.  To reap the benefits of meditation, it is recommended that you do it every day at the same time.  Mornings are said to be best.
