An Overview of Complementary Care Techniques

Researchers in brain chemistry have found that the mind is in constant communication with every part of the body, and that, in turn, parts of the body can speak to each other. Based on that premise, experts in complementary care use the following techniques to affect positive changes in the body through healthy communication with the mind.

Biofeedback:  This is one of the most well studied mind-body methods.  It is training patients to use signals from their own bodies to alter involuntary psychological responses to stress such as a rapid heart rate or stomach pain. Machines are used to monitor patients as they are learning the technique.  Eventually, patients should be able to use biofeedback to lower heart rate and blood pressure to lessen pain.

Guided Imagery:  Patients stimulate changes in body function by visualizing a symptom, such as a tight knot representing back pain, and then picturing the resolution of that image - the knot untying, for example.  Guided imagery has been shown to be effective at relieving pain.  Its effectiveness at reversing the course of certain diseases, such as cancer, is still unproven and controversial, although it is used by many practitioners for this purpose as well.

Cognitive Therapy: This method entails learning how to replace negative thought patterns with healthier, more realistic ones. Cognitive therapy is done through talking, one-on-one, with a trained therapist.  The resulting emotional release is believed to positively impact brain chemistry, reduce stress, and boost the body's ability to fight disease.

Support Group Therapy:  Support groups allow patients to talk about their fears and relieve feelings of isolation while receiving comfort and advice from others "in the same boat."  Researchers have found that this kind of social support can help boost the immune system and improve quality and length of life for those who are ill.
